October 11th - Daily Devotion - Day 3
The Poured-Out Life and the Fresh Anointing
Reading: Psalm 22:14 — A verse in which David describes himself as poured out like water, his strength gone, his heart overwhelmed.
Also read: 1 Samuel 16:12-13 — The account of Samuel anointing David, pouring oil over him as a sign of God's calling and empowerment.
Devotional:
You cannot receive a fresh outpouring if you are still holding tightly to the old. The pastor drew a powerful picture from the ancient practice of winemaking. Old wineskins had to be soaked in water, softened, and then coated with oil before they could hold new wine. The process was not instant. It required surrender.
David understood this. In Psalm 22, he described himself as completely poured out, nothing left to hold back. And yet it was that same David over whom Samuel poured the anointing oil. The emptying came before the filling.
God is not looking for polished vessels. He is looking for surrendered ones. When you pour out the old, you make room for something fresh. Something that stretches you. Something that covers you. Something that prepares you for what He has called you to carry.
Personal Reflection: What old habits, attitudes, or fears are still taking up space in your life that need to be poured out before God can pour in something new?
Practical Application: Spend ten minutes in prayer today doing nothing but pouring out. No requests. No agenda. Simply tell God everything that is weighing on you. Then sit in silence and allow His presence to begin filling the space you just created.
