Our Story

How it all started...

Founded on April 26, 1931, Lomax Tabernacle, now La Porte First Church, began with just 16 members meeting in a school building at the corner of L Street and Lomax School Road. Established by Maudine Womack and Floyd Hawkins, the church quickly formed its leadership and began holding services and revivals, moving between several locations in its early years, including La Porte and Morgan’s Point.
Throughout the 1930s and 1940s, the church experienced seasons of growth, transition, and perseverance under various pastors. In 1939, the congregation purchased property on South Carol Street and built their first permanent structure—humble with dirt floors, yet deeply meaningful as a place to call their own. By 1940, the building was completed, marking a significant milestone in the church’s development.
As the church continued to grow, it relocated to 210 W. Polk Street, where further expansion took place, including a new building completed in 1953. Over the following decades, the church steadily expanded its property, ministries, and outreach efforts, purchasing additional land, starting building projects, and even adding a church bus in 1966.
In 1971, the congregation held its first service in a newly constructed building on J Street, reflecting continued growth and vision for the future. Leadership transitions over the years brought new direction and strength, guiding the church into the modern era.
In the 2000s, the church expanded significantly, acquiring additional property and building a youth facility. In 2013, a new vision for expansion was cast, leading to a groundbreaking ceremony in 2017. Later that year, the church celebrated its first service in a new, modern building, with official services beginning in January 2018.
From its humble beginnings to its present-day campus, La Porte First's story is one of faith, resilience, and a steadfast commitment to growth and community impact.  To this day, La Porte First Church continues to faithfully serve the community through a variety of outreach efforts, ministry initiatives, and impactful projects, remaining committed to meeting needs and sharing hope both locally and beyond.
